Japanese team debuting in the Superstock category 24H Motorcycles, the Étoile team has chosen to establish its strategy for the weekend using artificial intelligence. Too bold a bet?
The 47th edition of the 24H Motos welcomes the debut of Team Étoile in the FIM EWC this weekend. If it is never easy to establish your marks in a discipline, the Japanese team has an unusual asset in its ranks. To try to minimize human errors, and a possible lack of experience during a race which puts those in the paddock to the test, the team decided to rely on the help of artificial intelligence.
A project that leaves skeptics in the ranks of their competitors. This is particularly the case of Stéphane Haddadj, team manager of the Honda n°55 (National Motos).
“There are surely decisions that the AI would take differently from us, but I think that the 24 Heures Motos must remain a race of men and team manager decisions, says Haddadj. The beauty of our sport lies in its ability to take 20 to 30 people in the same direction and AI is not capable of capturing that.
Especially since we train young mechanics, and the racing strategy also adapts depending on the people who make up the team., he then assures. In addition, the AI does not have the instinct and experience which are valuable assets in endurance. »
Words which do not seem to slow down Team Étoile which will use them to try to increase their chances. The technology used will actually provide predictions during the race to help the team make choices, although they plan to remain cautious.
“We will use it sparingly,” assures the team’s team manager, Takashi Ichikawa. But above all to help us define a good race strategy, we will use it as we progress and especially when it makes sense. »
It remains to be seen whether this advantage will work in the favor of the No. 25 or not during the 24H Motos race, the start of which will be given at 15:00 p.m. this Saturday.
