The 2026 Australian Grand Prix will remain a significant date in recent Formula 1 history. Ten years after Haas's arrival on the grid, a new team officially joined the championship: Cadillac. In Melbourne, the American team experienced its very first race weekend, a symbolic but also extremely demanding milestone for a structure built almost from scratch.

A successful first outing for Cadillac
In a paddock where every detail is decided by a thousandth of a second, Cadillac knew that its debut would be above all a full-scale test. The objective was not to immediately compete with established teams, but to run the two cars, accumulate data and begin to build the foundations of a long-term project.
During free practice, the team generally avoided major incidents, even though Sergio Perez briefly lost control of his car during the first session, spinning without consequence. Engineers were nevertheless able to validate several important aspects of the car, an encouraging first sign for a rookie team.
The qualifying session then served as a stark reminder of the harsh reality of the Formula 1 : Both Cadillac were eliminated in Q1. An expected result but one that did not dampen the enthusiasm of the American garage, the main focus being elsewhere: reliability, learning and experience.
However, the race presented a contrasting scenario. Valtteri Bottas had to retire prematurely after a problem with the power system, ending his first appearance in the colors of Cadillac. Sergio Perez, He managed to reach the finish line in 16th position, three laps behind the winner, giving the team its first official result.
For Bottas, the moment remains historic nonetheless.
“Today we made history. It was our very first Grand Prix weekend and simply being on the grid is already a source of immense pride for the whole team.”
The Finn, however, regretted the breakdown that stopped his race.
"It's frustrating that my Grand Prix ended like this because of...""We had a technical issue, but we learned a lot. Seeing the other car cross the finish line is very positive for everyone."
Perez He shares this sentiment. For the Mexican, finishing the race is already a significant achievement for such a young team.
“Crossing the finish line is a huge achievement, especially just one year after the project was announced. Now that we’ve passed this first milestone, we need to focus on performance to start closing the gap.”
The team director, Graeme LowdonHe, too, remains realistic in the face of the challenge.
“The competition in Formula 1 is absolutely formidable. We are up against the best teams and the best engineers in the world. But I am extremely confident in the group we are building.”
For CadillacThis first weekend was just a starting point. The team is currently using Ferrari engines, but the project ultimately envisions the arrival of a power unit developed directly by General Motors from 2029 onwards.
In the meantime, each race will be another step in building a new force on the grid. Melbourne may not have delivered a sporting miracle, but Cadillac has already achieved the essential: officially entering Formula 1 history.
