There are races whose outcome is easy to predict: during the 2025 season, we saw many examples. But for those who have only been following the sport for a few years, rest assured, it's sometimes much more exciting than that! Today, I wanted to talk to you about one of the most surprising Grand Prix races in the history of motorcycling, one that no one could have anticipated.

Arriving at the Ricardo Tormo circuit at the end of the 2006 season, the championship was on the line. It had been a strange year, to say the least. Valentino Rossi, the world champion since 2001, was struggling. His season was plagued by problems and bad luck. Between injuries and all sorts of technical issues, he was never able to gain a significant lead in the championship, and his inconsistent statistics bear witness to this. Five wins, five podiums, but many retirements and poor performances.

Nicky Hayden, his title rival, has shown impressive consistency (seven podium finishes), but "only" two victories. Struggling to convert those chances into wins doesn't bode well against "The Doctor," a true specialist in this area. The penultimate round in Portugal changed everything: Hayden was taken out at the worst possible moment by his own teammate Dani Pedrosa, due to a maneuver that has become infamous. The American's first retirement of the season is not a good omen. Valentino finished just a hair's breadth (two thousandths of a second) behind Toni Elias, in a finish that also went down in history.

Everything is up for grabs in Valencia. In the final race, the stakes are much higher. The pressure is different. It's either win or go home. The Italian arrives on Spanish soil with a slim eight-point lead. During qualifying, the outcome seems all but certain. Rossi takes pole position, reminding us that he shouldn't be written off so easily. He only needs second place to clinch the title, and that seems well within reach for the seven-time world champion. Nicky Hayden is not reassuring anyone: he is only starting fifth on the grid when he needs an XXL performance.

But against all odds, when the lights go out, Valentino Rossi He completely missed the start. He immediately dropped to seventh place, nearly colliding with Dani Pedrosa. Saturday's efforts were wasted. We have to start again.Pushing to the limit, Rossi made a fatal mistake on lap five. He lost the front end in the second corner, all by himself. This error cost him the title. Nicky Hayden now only needed to secure the world championship, and didn't even have to finish first. Besides, who was first? Capirossi? Pedrosa? Not even.

It was nothing more and nothing less than Troy baylisswho was making a wildcard appearance, replacing Sete Gibernau! The Australian was one of the virtuosos of our sport. Blessed with exceptional natural speed, he had carved out a niche for himself in Superbike, establishing himself as one of the strongest riders in the category in the early 2000s. WSBK world champion in 2001he had decided to join the MotoGP in 2003.

But the "Baylissic" struggled to get the best out of a tough Ducati Desmosedici GP3. That said, he did manage three podium finishes. After moving to Honda, he continued to struggle on machines that didn't suit him. Between injuries and poor results, He decided to return to Superbike for the year 2006.

He was absolutely untouchable that year. Troy completely dominated Superbike. Winner of the championship for the second time, he was called up by the Marlboro Ducati MotoGP team as a replacement for the final round in Valencia. Sete Gibernau was hampered by multiple injuries. The baylisstic missile accepted the offering.

From the qualifying rounds, he caused a sensation. The Australian, who hadn't ridden a Grand Prix machine for a year, qualified second ahead of his regular teammate Loris Capirossi. Once the race began, no one could stop his march to victory. In true Bayliss style, He won this Grand Prix hands down, finishing more than a second behind "Capirex"The feat is incredible and hasn't been repeated since. Imagine, basically, that Ducati gives Alvaro Bautista a chance and he wins a race in 2026.

Few sports can offer so much emotion in a single weekend. A wild-card driver wins, and the final outcome is absolutely insane. seeing the "Kentucky Kid" crowned champion, in tears at the end of the raceThese legendary images are only offered to us by the greatest circuits, and it is certain that no one will forget these battles on the Valencian track.
