Moto2 returns to Europe after four overseas rounds. To kick off this long tour of the Old Continent, the Jerez circuit hosts the world championship for the Spanish Grand Prix. After a hard-fought round in Qatar, Aron Canet took advantage of his superb victory to take the lead in the championship. Jake Dixon and Manuel Gonzalez, however, remain a few points behind the Spaniard, ready to reclaim the lead in a standings they have both already led this season.

Qualification 1:
After a hectic morning, during which Deniz Öncü once again smashed the lap record, the Moto2 riders are preparing to take part in Q1. From the very first attempts, Izan Guevara has established himself as the favorite for one of the four remaining spots to advance to Q2.
Behind him, Collin Veijer, Ivan Ortola, Alex Escrig and Darryn Binder battled it out for the top five. At the end of the session, however, Zonta van der Goorbergh joined the fray. The Dutchman clocked a lap of 5:1, placing him 40.349 seconds behind Guevara's time.
While Guevara was untroubled at the checkered flag, van der Goorbergh's attempt pushed Alex Escrig and Daren Binder out of the top four. Collin Veijer and Ivan Ortola qualified for Q4.
Q1 was a disaster for Tony Arbolino. Tenth in the session, he will start from 24th on the grid tomorrow in the race.
Qualification 2:
Barry Baltus, who was discreet this morning, is back at the forefront in Q2. The Belgian quickly clocked a time that put him in second place. He was now behind Senna Agius, and ahead of the in-form Deniz Öncü for the provisional front row.
Albert Arenas quickly made his mark, also joining the top three, placing ahead of the Turk. The three men thus completed the first round of time trials within a tenth of a second of each other. But the others weren't far behind: the top eight was within five tenths of a second of each other with six minutes remaining.
The competition intensified significantly as the drivers emerged from their pits once again. Manuel Gonzalez excelled with a lap of 1:39.858, which allowed him to take the lead by 32 thousandths of a second, ahead of Albert Arenas, who also improved. The top five were then separated by just a tenth before completing their final attempts.
Before the checkered flag, Manuel Gonzalez continued his pace, failing to improve due to a final sector that was worse than the rest of his lap. Albert Arenas held onto his second place, ahead of Senna Agius, who would start the race on the front row for the first time in his Moto2 career. Barry Baltus was thus relegated to the second row, with fourth place on the grid.
His teammate had a less playful Q2, as he crashed at Turn 6 at the very end of the session. He finished qualifying for the Spanish Moto2 GP with the 7th fastest time, just ahead of reigning Moto3 world champion David Alonso.
This pole position is Manuel Gonzalez's fourth of the year in five races. As many as Marc Marquez in MotoGP.
