Honda has taken another major step in its 2027 MotoGP project by planning the first test of its next-generation motorcycle at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia this week. This is a strategic step in preparing its machine to comply with the new technical regulations planned for 2027, which mark a complete overhaul of the engine and aerodynamic rules.

After KTM was the first manufacturer to run its 2027 motorcycle at Jerez — equipped with the brand new 850cc engine — Honda will be the second to present their machine on the track. The test will take place over two days. Wednesday and Thursdayand will allow Honda to put its 2027 prototype on tires for the first time Pirelli who will be joining the category from next season.

The test will not be conducted with the team's usual regular drivers, but with Takaaki Nakagami, who plays a key role in the development team of HondaThis reflects the effort of Honda to balance development between the 2026 machine, which is still being optimized, and the future motorcycle, which must meet new technical constraints.

The motorcycle used for the test will be the 2026 version, without ride height adjustment systems, with reduced aerodynamics and tires Pirelli.

Honda and KTM are already working on it.

The 2027 season will mark a break with the era of 1000cc engines. The technical regulations notably introduce: the switch to 850cc engines, reduced aerodynamics, the removal of ride height adjustment devices, and the arrival of Pirelli as a sole tire supplier, replacing Michelin .

These changes aim to simplify motorcycles and encourage racing that is more focused on riding skill than on the use of electronic and aerodynamic aids, while bringing the machines closer to the technology of production motorcycles.

In Honda's plan, Aleix Espargaró continues to lead the development of the 2026 machine, while the transition to the 2027 bike will be gradually taken over by other team members as the technical base is more advanced during the 2026 season.

This first test at Sepang is a strong signal: Doga is not simply responding to the new regulations, but is aligning itself now with development leaders — notably KTM — in the race for competitiveness for the new era of MotoGP.

Motorsport specifies that in addition to Honda's test team, the Japanese manufacturer's World Superbike team will also be present at Sepang, but without being able to use its racing motorcycles or enter its riders, nor its new test rider and six-time WSBK world champion, Jonathan Rhea, hurt.
