While he was due to team up with the reigning World Champion, Marco Bezzecchi regrets being the only regular Aprilia rider since the start of the season.
By signing with Aprilia last June, Marco Bezzecchi knew he would be teaming up with Jorge Martín, then in the championship fight. By the time winter testing began, he had become "the teammate of the reigning World Champion." A role that would challenge him to beat him on the track.
However, this role was very short-lived, as Jorge Martín was injured on the first day of testing in early February and didn't race until the Qatar Grand Prix in mid-April, where he suffered an even more serious injury. With his long recovery, his return date is currently unknown. In the meantime, he has been replaced by the Italian brand's test driver, Lorenzo Savadori.
A totally unexpected situation and that Marco Bezzecchi regrets. In his eyes, having Jorge Martín alongside him in the box would have been very challenging and would also have allowed him to share the development work. While Savadori is very present, he remains the test driver and continues to hold this role.
"Of course it's hard to be alone in the team. I'm not alone because there's obviously Savadori, but his work is different from what Jorge should be doing.", Bezzecchi said at the French GP. "For me, it's more that having Jorge would have been really good for me. Having him as a goal, taking him as a reference and trying to beat him, being pushed by him. I hope it would have been the same for him towards me. And then to develop the bike, I have to try a lot of things on my own. But in the end, that's how it is, and the only thing I can do is push and push."
In view of recent events which seem to be strongly shaking up the Aprilia clan, namely Martín's possible decision to terminate his contract, it could be Bezzecchi be alone in charge for a long time to come.
