The Italian finally had the last word on lap nine, and the Yamaha rider crossed the finish line in seventh position. While this remains a good result considering the performances of the other Yamaha riders (12th, 15th, 17th, and 20th), he didn't hide his frustration.
“The pace wasn’t there, and anyway, we know that right now there’s nothing we can do but defend. We don’t have the potential to attack. I only managed to do it briefly on the first lap, when Bezzecchi made a small mistake and I overtook him. Otherwise, there’s nothing to salvage from today.”he blurted out during his debriefing.
“The soft tire is really too soft for us, but it handles the corners much better and allows me to be faster. But in the race, with more than ten laps to complete, it becomes impossible. That said, I did an excellent lap in qualifying considering that from the last corner to the first braking zone you lose a lot of top speed. We'll see tomorrow with twice as many laps to go.”
