Aron canet (Honda) had totally dominated the tests and he started from pole position, alongside Joan mir (Honda) and Romano Fenati (Honda). The second line included Nicholas Bulega (KTM), George Martin (Honda) and Fabio di Giannantonio (Honda), and the third Enea Bastianini (Sling), Niccolo Antonelli (KTM) and John mcphee (Sling). Jules Danilo was twenty-first on the seventh line. He preceded the fastest Mahindra, driven by Albert Arenas.

It was the twenty-first Grand Prix of Aron Canet, who until now had not yet won a race, having as his best result a single podium with third place in Australia last year. The Austin race took place over 18 laps, a distance of 99,2 km. The temperature of the track at the time of departure was 20° and that of the track was 28°. Most riders preferred a medium Dunlop in the rear, except for some who chose a hard, such as Guevara, Rodrigo, Oettl and Kornfeil. Danilo and Guevara started with a soft at the front, the others with a medium.

The fastest to set off was Aron Canet, who preceded Joan Mir, Nicolo Bulega, Enea Bastianini, Jorge Martin and Romano Fenati. Canet and Mir quickly opened up a small gap, while Bastianini snatched third position from Bulega. Danilo was seventeenth. The lead of Canet and Mir was already 0.7 over third Bastianini 17 laps from the checkered flag. Will Bendsneyder fell without gravity, then in fourteenth position.

Canet continued at a very high pace and increased his lead to 1.1 over Mir and 2.6 over Martin and Fenati, when the race was stopped at the red flag due to a crash. Kaito Toba, who got up shortly after. Everything had to be done again for Canet. A new start was given for 12 laps, with the original starting grid, without Bendsneyder. Some of the drivers who started on hard tires were able to fit a new medium, while those who started on medium were forced to keep it, having no other in stock. Only Guevara remained hard back. Manuel Pagliani was blocked at the exit of the pits for having shown up too late. He started last for the warm-up lap, with Kaito Toba.

At the start of the second race, Canet was the fastest ahead of Fenati, di Giannantonio, Mir, Martin and Bulega. Canet, Fenati and di Giannantonio stood out slightly ahead of Mir, Martin, Bulega and Bastianini. Fenati took the lead, then Canet passed him again. Di Giannantonio third preceded Mir, Martin and Bulega. Canet and Fenati distanced di Giannantonio, Mir, Martin and Bulega. Danilo was seventeenth. Canet set the best lap in 2'15. 583.

Fenati took first position with 9 laps remaining, while Mir third was 0.5 behind, along with di Giannantonio, Martin and Bulega. Canet overtook Fenati, the fight was superb. Kaito Toba fell for the second time. Suddenly Aron Canet fell and Fenati found himself alone in the lead, 0.8 ahead of Martin, Mir, Bulega and di Giannantonio. Romano Fenati, winner here last year, clearly dominated 8 laps from the checkered flag with a full second ahead of Mir, Martin, Bulega and di Giannantonio.

At the halfway point, Fenati, who had not won since last year's Austin Grand Prix, had a solid lead of 1.7. Di Giannantonio, Mir, Martin and Bulega were fighting for second position. Fenati picked up the pace again and increased his advantage to 2.5. Nicolo Bulega soon 3 seconds ahead of di Giannantonio, Martin, Mir, Bastianini, McPhee and Guevara, the only one on a hard rear tire.

With 4 laps to go to the checkered flag, Fenati had a lead of 3.8 over Martin, and the chasing group fighting for second position now included eight drivers. Fenati, on another planet, increased his advantage to 4.3. Di Giannantonio recovered second place ahead of Martin, Mir and Bastianini.

Romano Fenati triumphed in Austin ahead of Jorge Martin, Fabio di Giannantonio, Enea Bastianini, Nicolo Bulega and Juanfran Guevara. Jules Danilo finished thirteenth. Marco Bezzecchi, for Alain Bronec's CIP team, finished seventeenth and first among the Mahindra drivers. For the third time this season, the podium was 100% Honda.
