For this very first session, a few clouds dotted the sky, while the air temperature was 18° and that of the track 19°. Livio Loi injured (victim of a broken collarbone in Misano) was replaced at Leopard Racing by Aron Polanco. Most of the drivers started this first free practice session in soft rear Dunlops.

Enea Bastianini set the best time at the start of the session in 2'01.6, before World Championship leader Joan Mir improved to 2'01.1. Maria Herrera was doing her best, but it seemed difficult due to her broken collarbone in Misano.

Bastianini regained the advantage half an hour from the checkered flag in 2.00.6. Jorge Martin, often at ease in Aragon, was ahead of him 2.00.123. He then preceded the other Hondas of Aron Canet, Enea Bastianini and Joan Mir. Jules Danilo occupied twenty-seventh position.

Halfway through the session, the times were not improving, with most teams focused on getting the setup right for the race. The grip of the track, average as for a first free practice session on Friday morning, did not favor pure performance. Jorge Martin was still suffering from his old broken ankle, complicated by a recent fall on his bike during a training session.

About ten minutes from the end, while the track was gradually improving, Enea Bastianini was the first to go under two minutes, in 1'59.406. He then preceded Bo Bendsneyder and Jorge Martin by 0.7, Aron Canet by 0.8 and Joan Mir by 1.06.

Martin and Bendsneyder took their turns under two minutes, but Bastianini retained command, while Dennis Foggia (for Junior Team VR46 Riders Academy) moved up to fourth position. Joan Mi accelerated in the final minutes and took command in 1'59.123, 0.2 ahead of Enea Bastianini and 0.5 ahead of Jorge Martin and Bo Bendsneyder.

On the penultimate lap, Aron Canet took the lead in 1'59.114. He finished the first session in the lead ahead of Joan Mir, Niccolo Antonelli, Enea Bastianini, Jorge Martin and Nicolo Bulega. Jules Danilo finished twenty-seventh.
