The track is drying when the Moto3s are put on the grid for this Argentine Grand Prix. The uncertainty comes from the very small drops which are still falling but a track at 23° should allow everyone to fit slick tires.
The race is declared “Wet” and will therefore not be stopped if bad weather returns.
Rain or no rain, it must be admitted, the one who intrigues, at the start of this race on silver soil, is the Malaysian Khairul Idham Pawi of the team Honda Team Asia.
The latter, aged 17 and coming from the FIM CEV Junior Moto3 World Championship, not only qualified 4th (then downgraded to 7th place) but this morning allowed himself to relegate lap after lap, with a certain confidence for a Rookie, all the other drivers more than a second away; #89, a number to certainly remember for the months to come, or even for the minutes to come!
In extremis, Livio Law tries a poker game and is the only driver to start on rain tires.
When the red lights go out, the first line composed of Brad Binder, Romano Fenati and Jorge Navarro, it is the Italian driver who starts the best but he is very quickly overtaken by Khairul Idham Pawi and Livio Loi.
The two men inexorably escape and dig a 5-second hole in three laps.
Then, quite incredibly for a driver on slicks, the Malaysian driver managed to build a gap of 15 seconds on his Belgian comrade who was gradually caught up by a peloton led by Adam Norrodin, Jorge Navarro, Aron Canet and Brad Binder.
14 laps from the checkered flag, Livio Loi was joined by Norrodin and Navarro who had slightly escaped from the chasing group.
At this moment, Khairul Idham Pawi, has a 20 second lead but the white flag with a red cross is waved, signaling the arrival of new drops of rain.
The new spearhead of the former speed driver Tadayuki Okada therefore wisely stabilizes his lead, which demonstrates that in addition to talent, he also has a certain maturity! A few alerts help in this regard…
Behind, we seem, no, we are powerless, and although we find the first line at the forefront, we cannot reduce the gap in the slightest.
Khairul Idham Pawi is so detached that he begins to overtake the last ones in the race…
The positions seem assured in the lead, with Pawi 27 seconds ahead of the Navarro/Norrodin duo, the fight is now confined to fourth place, 6 seconds behind these two men.
But ultimately, Adam Norrodin falls in the last turn and it's Brad Binder who inherits this last place on the podium.
Khairul Idham Pawi bring the Malaysia's first Grand Prix victory for what could have been a double had Norrodin not fallen. Until today, the last Asian Grand Prix victory dates back to 2010, with Yuki Takahashi on the Mistral in Barcelona.
Fabio Quartararo finished 13th, Alexis Masbou 21st and Jules Danilo 26th.
