Jaume Masiá celebrates his first podium and his first success in Argentina. “We just wanted to finish the race, but I could win and I did.”

Two Grands Prix at the start of the season, two “firsts” for the Moto3 category. After that of Kaito Toba in Qatar, the first success of Jaume Masia arrived. At barely 19 years old, the rider from Algemesí won after a great battle, one of those to which the minor category of the World Championship has accustomed us. It is also the first success of his team, Bester Capital Dubai, which in the past (also with other denominations) had “only” achieved positions on the second and third steps of the podium.

THE MOVEMENT TO THE WORLD

Looking fast since winter testing, as shown by his best time (despite the subsequent injury) at Jerez, Masiá has positioned himself as one of the drivers to watch. But let's go back a little: his first participation in the world was in 2017, at the age of 16, when he had the opportunity to compete in four races, finishing in the top 10 twice and setting the fastest lap in Austria. In 2018, he managed to compete in his first full season with Worldwide Race, now Bester Capital Dubai: His best result was then a fourth place at Assen, as well as nine other points scored.

THE NEW SEASON

We arrive at 2019. Best time in the winter tests in Jerez, ahead of Romano Fenati, then a foot injury which does not allow him to participate in the Qatar test. The (difficult) Grand Prix at Losail ends with a fall and a great desire to catch up. In Argentina, here he secures his first career pole position. A fall with Sergio García during the warmup risks complicating things, but the Spanish rider shows up normally at the start, without consequences, the bike being repaired in record time. The race turned out to be a fight as always, until Masiá took the risk of offering a good slipstream to finish first, with a minimum advantage over his rivals.

THE COMMENTARY AFTER THE RACE

The joy in the box and the pilot's tears of joy in the parc ferme are the classic reactions for an excellent result. He is the first driver capable of winning in Argentina from pole position. “I didn’t imagine it that way, I thought it was easier”, he declared particularly moved. “During the entire race, I attacked in a crazy way: if I relaxed, I would be overtaken straight away. It was a very difficult victory to achieve, but it was well deserved for me and the team.” Who knows how many people would have imagined this success for a driver so small that at the time he had to put ballast in the lower categories, a measure which also caused numerous injuries?

" THE TITLE ? THIS IS NOT OUR GOAL.”

A sought-after success in Argentina? The answer may surprise you: “Really, the goal on Sunday was just to finish the race, top 10, top 15 or whatever. But I had the chance to win and I took it.” “The title no, that’s not our goal” concluded 'Macaulay' (the pretty nickname on his costume, a tribute to the actor Macaulay Culkin, the protagonist of the famous film 'Mom, I Missed the Plane'). Now he just wants to enjoy this first victory in the World Championship while waiting for the next stage, scheduled in Austin from April 12 to 14.
