Aged 36, he made his debut in the World Championship in 1997 and was for a long time the youngest winner, aged only 15. Melandri won the 250GP World Championship in 2002 and, four seasons later, he was runner-up in the MotoGP world championship. He arrived in Superbike in 2011, fighting several times for the title. In this category, he won 22 victories, and was on the podium 73 times in the 156 races contested. In 2019 he races with the Yamaha GRT, with which he finished third at the first round in Australia.
