Nice, the hometown of the unfortunate Jules Bianchi who died on July 17, 2015 following an accident during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix, will rename one of its streets after the Formula 1 driver.

The mayor, Philippe Pradal, and the president of the Nice metropolis, Christian Estrosi, announced yesterday that the selected location will be the old rue du fir, which is a symbolic place in the heart of a Saint-Isidore district dedicated to Nice athletes. Close to the Nice football stadium, the district already includes the street of the Olympic gold medalist swimmer Camille Muffat, who also died in 2015 following a helicopter accident.

The opening ceremony will take place on Monday January 23 at 16:45 p.m. at the corner of avenue Pierre-de-Coubertin.

The controversial accident and the long coma of Jules Bianchi had greatly upset all French athletes and the public.
