Somewhat overshadowed by the thunderous start of Valentino Rossi and the fact that he did not finish in the leading quartet, Jorge Lorenzo nonetheless achieved his smallest gap with this season's winner at Silverstone.
By finishing fifth, but only three seconds behind the winner, the Majorcan rider thus confirms his current progress in his process of adapting to the Ducati.
Ambitious, he hopes to do even better in Misano…
Jorge Lorenzo : “This time I opted for a more conservative start than usual, and maybe that slowed my progress during the first few laps. For sure, after a rather difficult weekend, in which we never exactly found the right rhythm, we must be happy because, in the race, I managed to manage the accelerator well and preserve the tires. This way the rear tire remained consistent throughout. It wasn't enough to catch up with the leading group but it was enough to close the gap and mark my best result of the season to that point. And I think that in Misano we will be able to do even better. I want to congratulate Andrea, who did a masterful race and showed that he is perfect in managing this type of race. His results speak for themselves: four victories and the championship lead can only make the entire team happy. »
During the post-race press conference, the Ducati rider provided the following details: “I didn’t get off to a good start, I didn't gain any positions, so I kept mine. I could have overtaken a few riders under braking, but I decided not to take any risks and stayed there. This time I changed the way I ride a little, especially with the throttle to create less slip and keep the tire life longer. That's the only thing that's changed. But I don't think that if I had been a little faster at the start I would have damaged the tire more. I think it's more a question of how I open the throttle, because until now I was opening the throttle a bit like with the Yamaha, and with this bike you have to change that kind of style a bit. during the race. And finally, I understood a little about how to keep the tire life, and this will definitely help me on the next circuits. In the future we will have to improve the behavior of the engine, I think we can progress in this area and the engineers will work on it. Because when you start to lose grip at the rear, the bike behaves a little more aggressively and you have to be very gentle in the acceleration. Probably before this race I was a little too aggressive when I started to lose grip at the rear. Now I'm changing my style. In the future, I would like to be able to return to my normal way of riding, but at the moment this is not possible, so we have to work with what we have. »
