During the Spanish Grand Prix, the drivers met on Friday May 5 to decide within their Safety Commission on the choice of the Michelin front tire, with a more or less hard carcass. The decision, like the entire meeting, had to be kept confidential, and Crutchlow didn't like it when it became known shortly afterward that Jorge Lorenzo, Maverick Vinales and Loris Baz were the only three to vote against the tough carcass.

20 of the 23 drivers present were in favor of the stiffer construction, also referred to as "70". Marc Marquez, Valentino Rossi and Cal Crutchlow complained during winter testing that the soft casing made braking and entering corners uncertain. It is also to this cause that Marquez attributed his crashes in Argentina and at Le Mans.

Crutchlow is shocked that confidentiality is not respected: “ I'm not saying which tire I voted for, and I don't know how the journalists got all this information.

“It’s ridiculous when the media knows who voted. The media always needs a scandal. But what happens in the Security Commission should not come out of it. We're told we can't tell you anything. And then some pilots leave the meeting and reveal all the details about the secret votes. “

“Of course, some people were not happy with the outcome of this vote. Or some might not understand what they were doing because they are stupid.

“Of course, I voted for the front tire which is the most advantageous. We were asked about it in Jerez. But I've already done two tests, they don't need to ask me, my answer is obvious. »
