Maverick Viñales had to twist his Yamaha in all directions for him to get into Q1 before finally qualifying in ninth position, just behind Jonas Folger's satellite M1.
For the leader of the world championship, this is a hard blow to take, especially since, for the moment, Iwata's troops seem powerless to make their horses competitive on the bumpy and loose circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya.
What will happen in the race?
In the opinion of the majority of drivers, preserving your tires will be the likely key to a good result, at least as important as the 7 tenths conceded in qualifying by the number 25.
Maverick Vinales : “Compared to yesterday, we have improved the bike a little, but in our opinion the problem is not the bike but rather a combination of factors. I tried a lot of settings today and nothing worked, not even our basic setup. I just tried to do my best and that's what I did. I aim to make a good start tomorrow, and then I will do my best again. »
Massimo Meregalli, Team manager: “We tried different settings and various tire options, both with Maverick's bike and Valentino's, during FP3 and FP4, but none of the options gave us the improvement we expected. With that in mind, what Maverick did in crashing out of Q1 shows just how hard he attacks. We still have a lot of work to do for tomorrow, we will work hard tonight to find solutions that we can test during the warm up which will be crucial to prepare for the race. »
