At 48 years old, John “McPint” McGuinness is eagerly awaiting his thirtieth year of professional competition to begin, this year with a deal with Quattro Plant Kawasaki. He has won the Tourist Trophy 23 times. His last victory on the Isle of Man dates back to last year, when he won the Classic TT in August on a Paton.

The current situation is no more favorable for road races than for those contested on circuits. Firstly because an event without spectators is unthinkable, due to lack of being able to control any amateurs. Then because it involves, for competitors, trips and stays that are currently impossible. John is going in circles a bit.

“For me, it's all about racing, because that's pretty much all I know. Like Michael (Rutter), for years all we did was go racing and if we weren't racing we went to dealership events to talk, motorcycle shows, all kinds demonstrations, but this year, I did absolutely nothing” explained the “Morecambe Missile” to Phil Wain of bikesportnews.com.

“As well as the shows and entertainment, road racing allows us to earn a few pounds now, whether it's starting bonuses or finish prize money, but I won't make a cent This year.

“Don't get me wrong, there are people in worse situations than me, but there is no help for road racing drivers this year. We are just one number among others. Ultimately, motorcycling and racing are not part of any of the government's decisions. We are not a big sport like football. »

“Normally my schedule is closed for the year, but that's not the case now and I don't know when things will start again. Everyone is working hard to make this happen, obviously, but I think it's going to be difficult. »

“How can we have eight commissioners on a post when the minimum distance between people must be respected. And again, not to mention a paddock filled to the brim! And no spectators. Half of me wants to see a race in the UK, but the other half just wants to say “forget it guys, let’s all come back next year.” »

“If someone waved a magic wand and said we're definitely going to race in August, great, we'd all know where we are. But all this is unknown at the moment and we must be patient. Pilots are known to be selfish, so it's not easy. »

“This year is a new start for me, even at my age, but I'm lucky because Pete, Bournemouth Kawasaki and the team are still with me and we've already talked about 2021. I'll be 49 then, it won't be so not easier, but I'll try my luck again. »
