Ô how confusing and bitter the third day was du Dakar 2022, the second stage after the prologue, for Danilo Petrucci !
While the Italian rookie had achieved the 23rd time of the prologue then, even better, the 13th time in the first special, the engine of his KTM 450 suddenly shut down at kilometer 115 of the 3rd stage, between Ha'il and Al Qaisumah while he was setting off at a hell of a pace: 7th at km 40 then 4th at km 80!
« It was very nice until a few kilometers because I think I was fighting in the top five. I had a lot of fun because the stage was very fast and I saw two guys 2 km in front of me. There were some very fast parts and we did, I don't know how many, 20 or 30 kilometers at full throttle. Like that, it was very cool, driving at 150 on flat ground. »
Electric fuel pump problem diagnosed the person concerned, but despite all the attempts of the Tech3 pilot, the machine remained silent before being evacuated by helicopter.
Frustration and despondency then gave way to questions over the hours: abandonment or big penalty? Was the adventure, so promising, already over, with an early return to Terni?
« I had to call because I didn't know what to do. I opened the jacket part and inside there should have been the phone, the passport, a credit card, some money and the driver's license, but there was nothing left! Now I am without a phone, without a passport and without a credit card. Now I will take citizenship from here (laughs) and we will try to continue. »
Yesterday, no one really knew what would result and we had to wait for the publication of the classification of the stage, well after the arrival of Joan Barreda (Honda), to discover a Danilo Petrucci ranked 139th, certainly almost 19 hours behind the fastest of the day, but classified anyway (just like a famous former biker, Stephane Peterhansel, by car) !
We are no longer talking about abandonment, and a priori neither about a comeback since in the general classification the friendly pilot is 138th, eight hours behind the 137th...
More Danilo Petrucci can continue to ride and face this monument that is the Dakar. And we are sure that, despite his sore ankle, despite all the mishaps already suffered, and despite those encountered yesterday in addition to his mechanical breakdown, the boy sometimes smiles under his helmet, realizing his dream.

In the general classification unlike the cars where the fight seems to be limited to a clash between Nasser Al-Attiyah et Sébastien Loeb, there are still a good twenty of them in less than an hour, the Argentinian Sam sunderland (GasGas) preceding the French Adrien van beveren (Yamaha), the Austrian Matthias walkner (KTM), the American Skyler Howes (Husqvarna), Spanish Lorenzo Santolino (Sherco), the Chilean Pablo Quintanilla (Honda) and the Australian Daniel Sanders (GasGas) which lost leadership yesterday.

As we publish these lines, the drivers have started this 3rd stage and the fastest have already completed the special stage. Portuguese Joaquim Rodrigues (Hero) got there first, right in front Toby Price (KTM), Mason Klein (KTM) and Skyler howes (Husqvarna). But, pleasant surprise, the volunteer Danilo Petrucci crossed the finish line in 22nd position after only losing 9 minutes, just behind the Frenchman Camille Chapière (KTM)!
