In 2016, the GSX-RR had traction issues, so a new engine was tested at the end of the season by Andrea Iannone to provide an improvement. He gave a positive opinion during private tests at Jerez in November, which he then confirmed in February at Sepang. It was only later during the European Grands Prix that it turned out that this choice was not the right one.

“We made a mistake in a technical choice for this season » Brivio told crash.net« In 2016 we wanted to solve the traction problem, one of our weak points was traction out of corners. So we developed a more progressive engine with certain characteristics that are supposed to help the rider in this area. »

“We took this engine to Jerez last November and tested it. Andrea liked it. We confirmed it again at Sepang in February. He liked it and confirmed. It seemed to help on the traction side. »

“But as the season progressed, we realized that this engine was creating problems in other areas, like corner entry. Basically it negated its benefits. This created a problem on some tracks where braking and corner entry are very important. That was one of the problems we had this year. »

Then following a test in the days following the Aragon GP, the two Suzuki riders placed fourth and fifth in Japan before both were engaged in a memorable eight-rider battle at the front of the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

“I would say that Motegi’s performance comes as a result of our test in Aragon” Brivio said.. “There we tested something for 2018, but it was time to review some parameters, to check some parts again. Nothing new or revolutionary, but improvements. »

“It gave both drivers and, especially Andrea, more confidence. I saw him more relaxed, more confident and looking towards the future. We see areas we can improve for next year. We have some ideas. »
