During the fourth free practice session for the Catalan Grand Prix, the British rider crashed in the second corner and his left hand became trapped under the bike. A severe abrasion tore the skin from the top of his left pinky finger, and he was forced to withdraw from the race, not because of the injury, but because of a significant risk of infection.

He was treated at the Barcelona hospital, the most accustomed in the world to motorcycle rider trauma, and which supplies the medical intervention team for the Grands Prix. There was at least this positive side for the KTM rider.

A skin graft operation was being considered for the damaged finger, but ultimately it seems possible that Bradley could compete in the Dutch Grand Prix without having to undergo this operation.

A few days before the race, Smith explained that “ Since Saturday's crash, my finger has been checked every day to see if there is any infection and to see how fast the healing is progressing.

“At the moment the doctors are happy day to day with the way he is, so we won't be doing any skin grafts or other operations, which is fantastic.

“They don't expect a full recovery from the injury in the short term, but I should be ready for the Assen race.

“Now it’s just about continuing to do as much as possible to speed up recovery with creams and cleanliness. I hope this week we will be ready to return to around 90% at Assen. »
