After a difficult start to the season, the smile returned to Sam Lowes' face, with an excellent performance during the two qualifying sessions, despite an engine failure.

The first session on Friday didn't go too badly for the Briton who set the nineteenth time, meaning he was ahead of four drivers. He finished twentieth in second, and the rain on Saturday morning forced him to go through Q1.

It was on this occasion that he was particularly brilliant, taking second time, 0.265 behind his compatriot Scott Redding, and 0.02 in front Jack Miller.

In qualifying, Sam did very well in the wet, managing to move his Aprilia into tenth position. He could logically hope to continue to improve, but an engine failure decided otherwise.

For Sam Lowes, “ Yesterday on the dry track, I was already quite fast and today, on the wet track, I found a good feeling straight away.

“I haven't driven the RS-GP much in these conditions, but everything works well. Qualifying could have been even better. In any case, tenth place shows our progress and it is a good starting point to build a solid race.

“To be honest, I prefer a race on dry asphalt, but I'm confident in any case. The top 10 could be a realistic goal for tomorrow. »

According to Aleix Espargaro, “ This morning, on the wet circuit, I felt good. I finished the session in seventh place with good feelings.

“In the afternoon, I didn't find the same feeling. There was less grip and the conditions were really demanding. Despite this, I missed Q2 by a hair, less than a tenth.

“Obviously our race tomorrow will be more complicated because of our starting position, but I think on a dry track we will be able to do well. »
