While the World Championship has been dominated since the start of the season by Honda, it was an Austrian machine which won during the first free practice session, with Philipp Oettl ahead of Enea Bastianini, Romano Fenati , Maria Herrera, Bo Bendsneyder, Aron Canet, Jorge Martin and Joan Mir.

This Dutch weekend started coolly, with 18° for the air and 22° for the track, one of the coldest Friday mornings since the start of the year. There were a few clouds, but the track was dry. Many riders started with a soft Dunlop in the front and a hard one in the rear, to save the mediums they would need later.

Will Bendsneyder, at home in Assen, was the first to set a fast lap in 1'45.176. Then Romano Fenati improved to 1'45.153, before Bendsneyder took the lead again in 1'45.136. gabriel rodrigo took command in 1'44.607. Jules Danilo occupied sixteenth position at 0.7 with 25 minutes remaining. 19 drivers were then in the same second.
Juanfran Guevara took the lead in 1'44.431. Gabriel Rodrigo improved to 1'44.057. We were then preparing, around 20 minutes from the checkered flag, to drop below 1'44. Tatsuki suzuki (SIC58 Squadra Corse) almost achieved it in 1'44.046.
Andrea Migno fell without gravity in turn 16. George Martin took command 10 minutes from the end in 1'44.040. Several drivers put on a set of new tires, always with a soft one at the front and a hard one at the rear. Some had a medium mounted in the back.
Jorge Martin cracked the 1'44 mark by being the first to pass in 1'43.917. Enea Bastianini took over in 1'43.335, more than half a second ahead of Aron Canet. Philipp Oettl improved on his KTM to 1'43.231, and won ahead of Enea Bastianini, Romano Fenati, Maria Herrera, Bo Bendsneyder, Aron Canet, Jorge Martin and Joan Mir. Jules Danilo was twentieth.
