First single-seater designed entirely by Adrian Newey Apart from Red Bull for almost twenty years, theAston Martin F1 Team AMR26 is as intriguing as it is worrying. Radical in its choices, the 2026 project reignites the eternal debate surrounding genius… and the risks assumed by Newey.

A return to his roots for Adrian Newey

For the first time since its partial withdrawal from F1 in 2018, Newey designing a car from start to finish. After years devoted in part to the Valkyrie project, the British engineer regained total freedom. The result: an AMR26 immediately hailed as " extreme recalling the Mercedes Benz to a zero cockpit by 2022.

The all-black livery seen in Barcelona was not just an aesthetic choice: it also aimed to conceal bold aerodynamic and mechanical solutions, particularly in terms of suspension.

The suspension triangles, very high at the front as well as at the rear, betray an obsession: reducing aerodynamic drag, a key factor in the 2026 regulations. Newey had already made the difference in 2022 at Red Bull by anticipating the porpoising.
But in 2026, the equation changes: pure aerodynamics and overall efficiency will take precedence over suspension alone.

While the AMR26 evokes the concept of a "zero" cabin, it doesn't fully adopt its design principles. The air intake remains conventional in width, but extremely narrow vertically. The very narrow engine cowling, however, raises a major concern: will the airflow from the sidepods properly reach the rear diffuser?

History reminds us that similar choices have already cost dearly to Newey, especially with the McLaren MP4-18 and MP4-19A, victims of chronic overheating.

Another major unknown: the engine. Honda Racing Corporation admitted to having difficulties with the thermal component of its 2026 propulsion system. A worrying admission for Fernando Alonsowhose last collaboration with Honda remains a bitter memory.

In Barcelona, the Spaniard posted a best time far from that of Charles Leclerc, revealing the extent of the potential delay.

Finally Aston Martin must deal with a structural problem: correlation. Newey He himself admitted that the Silverstone wind tunnel and simulator were not yet providing reliable data. The project is estimated to take… two years.

Without authority figures to impose strict deadlines, Newey could find himself exposed like never before, a prisoner of his own quest for perfection

The AMR26 embodies everything that makes Adrian Newey : an extraordinary vision, maximum risk-taking, and the promise of a stroke of genius… or a spectacular failure. For Aston Martin et AlonsoThe challenge is immense. It remains to be seen whether, in 2026, audacity will finally prevail over the curse.
