Thirty-nine young hopefuls met this year in the Junior World Championship to succeed Nicolo Bulega. From the youngest Alonso López aged 14 to the youngest Nakarin Atiratphuvapat, from Thailand and aged 20, they will establish a first hierarchy this weekend in Valencia before meeting in three weeks at Le Mans for their second event, on the occasion of the French Grand Prix.
In the first session this Saturday morning, Lorenzo Dalla Porta was the fastest on his Husqvarna in 1'40.275, ahead of Marcos Ramirez on KTM, and his teammate from the Laglisse Academy Husqvarna team Raul Fernandez. The Japanese from the Asian Talent Team followed closely behind them, with Kaito Toba fourth ahead of Ayumu Sasaki. In sixth position, Makar Iurchenko brought a touch of exoticism from his native Kazakhstan. He preceded Dennis Foggia, the 2016 representative of the VR46 Riders Academy in this championship.
Enzo Boulom, integrated into Alex Rins' team "Procercasa-42 MS" was ahead of his teammate Filippo Fuligni in 23rd position in 25th. The other Frenchman in the category Lyvann Luchel is entered by the Larresport team in the Production category, with the chassis, exhaust and air box free, but the original engine. Larresport also runs Francisco Requena and Aleix Cotoli, also on Production Hondas. In the first session, Lyvann Luchel ranked thirty-seventh overall, but above all fourth in the Production category.
Ayumu Sasaki took the lead for quite a long time during the second session in 1'41.120, almost a second off Dalla Porta's time in the morning. Then his teammate Kaito Toba took over the lead at the end of the session in 1'40.746. Finally Toba improved a little further in 1'40.356, which did not beat the time set in the morning by the Italian from the Laglisse team. His compatriot Sasaki finished second in this second session, and it will be interesting to follow the progress of the two Japanese this season.
Here are combined results of the two qualifying sessions.
