The weather was favorable at the time of departure, with weak sunshine, 16° for the air temperature and 25° for that of the track. Aron Canet started from pole position, with Joan Mir and Nicolo Bulega alongside him. On the second row were Marcos Ramirez, Tony Arbolino and Romano Fenati, then on the third row were Philipp Oettl, Bo Bendsneyder and Enea Bastianini. Jules Danilo started from ninth.

Jorge Martin, who fractured his right tibia and ankle on Friday, will have surgery this Monday in Barcelona and he hopes to be back for the next Grand Prix in Brno on August 6. Danny Kent, replacing the injured Niccolo Antonelli, and Maria Herrera were penalized by a drop of 12 places on the grid for having driven three times on Friday at more than 110% of one of their best partials. 18 drivers were fined €500 for driving too slowly in the first sector when leaving the pits.

While Mahindra will leave the Grands Prix at the end of the season, there was talk of Niccolo Antonelli and Enea Bastianini next year at Leopard Racing, including Joan Mir will leave in Moto2 at Marc VDS Racing while Livio Loi would not be retained.

On the grid, all the drivers wore a medium Dunlop at the front and a hard one at the rear, except Romano Fenati who preferred a medium rear.

Joan Mir was the fastest at the start ahead of Marcos Ramirez, Tony Arbolino, Aron Canet, Romano Fenati and Nicolo Bulega. Ramirez took first position, ahead of Mir, Fenati, Arbolino, Bulega and Canet. At the start of the race, Fenati, Mir, Ramirez, Arbolino and Bulega stood out slightly. Canet, sixth at 1.1, lost a little ground. Jules Danilo was twenty-first.

Mir took command ahead of Ramirez, Fenati, Bulega and Arbolino. Canet was at 1.9. Maria Herrera fell in the first corner. Mir retained first place, followed by Ramirez, Fenati, Bulega and Arbolino. Darryn Binder was sixth at 3.4 while Canet continued to drop.

The top five remained grouped, led by Mir ahead of Fenati, Ramirez, Bulega and Arbolino. Oettl, Guevara and Binder were fighting for sixth position at 4.1. John McPhee fell in the last turn without gravity.

Ramirez took the lead ahead of Mir, who overtook him shortly after. Fenati, Arbolino and Bulega followed closely. Jules Danilo was seventeenth. Aron Canet dropped to eleventh position.

Mir, Ramirez, Fenati, Bulega and Arbolino grouped together opened a gap of 5.2 on their pursuers led by Oettl ahead of Guevara. Jules Danilo got back into the points, in fifteenth position.

Fenati took first position 12 laps from the checkered flag, while Aron Canet, the man from pole position, fell without gravity. He was third in the Championship ahead of Jorge Martin (withdrawal this Sunday).

Mir took the lead again in front of Fenati, ahead of Ramirez, Arbolino and Bulega. Oettl sixth was at 6.3. Jules Danilo continued his comeback and was in thirteenth position. Danny Kent fell without gravity. Maria Herrera was leaving the pits after her team repaired her bike following her crash.

Tony Arbolino fell lightly in turn 2 and Bulega lost ground avoiding him. Fenati, Mir and Ramirez then competed for first position. Bulega fourth was at 2.1 and Oettl fifth at 8.1. Jules Danilo was tenth.

The fight for first place was limited to Mir, Ramirez and Fenati. Ramirez took the lead with 3 laps remaining, ahead of Mir and Fenati. Then Mir took the first position from him. Fenati entered the lead on the final lap.

Under the checkered flag, Joan Mir won the German Grand Prix ahead of Romano Fenati, Marcos Ramirez, Nicolo Bulega, Philipp Oettl and Enea Bastianini. Jules Danilo ranked fourteenth.
