All the drivers were discovering the new Sachsenring surface, which didn't seem bad in the dry, although it was difficult to tell as there was no rubber deposit. A time marker was provided by Jorge Martin with an excellent best time ahead of Bo Bendsneyder, Nicolo Bulega, Philipp Oettl and Joan Mir.

FP2 1'27.496 Enea Bastianini
FP3 1'27.162 Enea Bastianini
Qualification 1'27.129 Enea Bastianini
Warm up 1'40.072 Khairul Idham Pawi
Course Pawi, Locatelli, Bastianini
All time lap record 1'26.174 Kent 2015

The air temperature was 15° and that of the track 14°. The new asphalt was completely dry, but heavy clouds hovered over the circuit. Danny Kent replaced the injured Niccolo Antonelli at Aki Ajo KTM. All the drivers rushed out of the pits on slicks, fearing future bad weather. Romano Fenati had taken out his beautiful cap (see below).

Enea Bastianini set the first reference time in 1'31. He accelerated in 1'29.924. Joan Mir slightly preceded him in 1'29.916.

Half an hour from the end, Joan Mir dominated in 1'29.589, 0.01 ahead of Romano Fenati and 0.03 ahead of Enea Bastianini. Jules Danilo was fifteenth at 1.025. Kaito Toba fell quite sharply in turn 2. He got up, but in poor shape. John McPhee then fell in turn 1, without gravity.

Jorge Martin progressed in 1'29.510. The times were very close with the top five gathered within a tenth of a second halfway through the session. Martin improved to 1'29.469. Kaito Toba, after his fall, had recovered well and seemed able to resume the session. His motorcycle a little less.

Martin, always fast on a lap, progressed in 1'29.460, then Bo Bendsneyder replaced him at the top of the timing screens in 1'29.371. Martin replied in 1'28.985. It was the first time under 1'29. Gabriel Rodrigo took over in 1'28.952, 0.006 ahead of Fabio di Giannantonio.

Di Giannantonio improved to 1'28.717. That was about two seconds off the lap record on the old surface. Most riders rode a soft Dunlop in the front and a hard one in the rear, to get a feel for how long it would last on the new surface. There was a lot of wear on the left side.

Jorge Martin passed in 1'27.868, only one second off the lap record. Bulega moved into second at 0.1, ahead of Bendsneyder at 0.2 and Philipp Oettl at 0.3. Under the checkered flag, the best time went to Jorge Martin, ahead of Bo Bendsneyder, Nicolo Bulega, Philipp Oettl and Joan Mir. Jules Danilo was nineteenth.
