The Yamaha rider was at the front throughout the free sessions which took place in the dry, but was unable to maintain his pace in the wet in qualifying.

We were waiting for a Maverick Vinales very strong at Silverstone, on this circuit which has been so successful for him in the past, and the free sessions confirmed his domination. Indeed, in very good shape this Friday, he led FP1 before finishing third in FP2. He then continued his momentum this Saturday by finishing fifth in FP3 and leading again in FP4.

Unlike previous complicated Grands Prix, he qualified without any problem for Q2, and was rather confident for qualifying, despite the rain which fell at the end of FP4. Unfortunately, the Spanish driver still encounters just as many difficulties in the wet, and he has not managed to maintain the excellent feeling he had in the dry. At the end of the fifteen minutes of the session, he could not do better than eleventh, 2,3 seconds from pole, and will therefore start from the fourth row tomorrow.

Despite this disappointing result given what he had shown throughout the sessions, he did not seem unhappy and remained positive, which has been rather rare lately: “I concentrated a lot in FP4 in order to have as a reference point the improvement of my feeling on the bike. We have improved quite a bit compared to yesterday, and I think we have progressed in terms of pace. I'm happy, but it's true that we still have work to do in the wet. The weather is the same for everyone, so we have to try to find a way to be fast. Fortunately, we have some data and some things to work on. »
