The Yamaha rider had an eventful Saturday. After a complicated morning and a still struggling start to the afternoon, he revealed himself during qualifying and achieved his second best result of the year!

Maverick Vinales had a day full of ups and downs. First fourteenth in FP3, he then managed to finish fifth in FP4. Not automatically qualified for Q2, he snatched his place in Q1, almost with difficulty against a very motivated Tito Rabat. Q2 therefore looked complicated, but against all expectations the Spaniard suddenly had an excellent feeling and went for third place, only 96 thousandths from pole position!

An excellent result of which he is the first to be surprised: “I didn't expect to make a first row because the morning went badly. I couldn't improve my time from yesterday, but in the end we worked hard. We knew the problems we were having and we were able to move forward. The team is working better, and we are not giving up. After yesterday, I was hoping today would go better, but ultimately it's not about how the day starts, but more about how it ends. »

He recognizes that the problems encountered since the start of the year have persisted at Mugello, but has kept his line from Le Mans, that is to say not giving up and remaining positive: “We didn't take the right route this morning and got a little lost. It was hard to stay focused and positive, but I kept fighting, and I'm going to keep pushing, like always, and then we'll see. I think we can improve the bike on a few points tomorrow. »

However, Viñales remains cautious about his ability to fight for the podium tomorrow: “Currently we have a good level to do a fast lap, and we will see if we can do the same thing throughout the race. »
