This weekend on Italian Grand Prix will have a particular flavor for Italian riders engaged in Moto2. With a Morbidely solid leader of the championship, we can expect to chant “ Il Canto degli Italiani » but the matter is not yet a foregone conclusion for the already four-time winner of this season. Other compatriots, and not the least important ones, will want to set the tone, while foreign competition will be keen to spoil any desire for a local celebration.
The Italian Grand Prix at Mugello will be the sixth meeting of the year in the Grand Prix calendar. In Moto2, two facts mark this first third of the campaign: the four victories of Franco Morbidelli and the five successes of the Marc VDS team. Because when the Italian is sluggish, like in Jerez, it's his teammate Alex Marquez, third in the provisional ranking, who takes over. A consistency which inevitably annoys the other teams on the grid.
The first of these is a CarXpert Interwetten structure that bends but does not break. No success yet to his credit, certainly, but a pilot Tom Luthi, reigning vice-World Champion, who only missed the podium at Jerez. He has scored points in every outing this season. The Swiss is second overall, twenty points behind Morbidely.
Si Lüthi has not yet made a misstep, the fourth regretting having played his joker at Le Mans. Miguel Oliveira is the one and shows that his new KTM could not be more well born. The Portuguese's podiums attest to this, he is to be taken seriously. A seriousness that must also be given to the brilliant beginner Pecco Bagnaia. Since returning to Europe, the Sky Racing Team VR46 driver has been untenable. Second at Jerez, runner-up to Morbidely in France, a front row at Le Mans, the one who won two victories for Mahindra in Moto3 during 2016 is gaining momentum. He is fifth in the championship, in the aspiration ofOlive tree.
To these names are added a Nakagami capable of the best and the worst, but also a Baldassarri who will remember having missed the consecration at home by nothing compared to Johann zarco one year ago. The Forward team will give everything to shine on its land and will also be able to count on a Marini much more convincing this season.
French side, fabio quartararo will want to regain his form from Qatar on a track he finished in fifth position in 2016 with his Moto3. As for Tech3, we will still rely on Virgin who likes to feel the breeze of his Mistral610 at the gates of the top5. An ambition shared by the Suter troupe led by agitated.
