A veiled sun lights up the Andalusian circuit with rising temperatures (24/32) which, in theory, if they remain very good, will nevertheless not facilitate the improvement of the times achieved this morning.
In theory…
FP1 2015: 1'39.174 by Jorge Lorenzo.
FP1 2016: 1'40.270 by Jorge Lorenzo.
FP2 2015: 1'39.300 by Jorge Lorenzo.
Record for the best time in a race: 1'37.910 by Jorge Lorenzo in 2015.
First appearance of fins at Suzuki. Only Aleix Espargaro will use them this weekend, with Maverick Vinales focusing on classic GSX-RR development.
Aleix Espargaro immediately improves his morning time and is positioned 3rd in the combined, but this is indeed only a coincidence because all the drivers seem able to improve, starting with Jorge Lorenzo, in 1'40.005 .
His pursuers, Marquez, Barbera and Rossi (the latter with small fins) do the same.
Aprilia riders now also use ailerons.
At the end of the first run, Marc Marquez took command, in 1'39.900, a tenth ahead of Lorenzo and four ahead of Rossi and Barbera.
The second run brings almost no change to the provisional classification, and most of the drivers are still on Soft front / Medium rear tires, even if Lorenzo uses a Hard front tire and Iannone a Soft rear. At this moment, Dani Pedrosa is the only driver in the field who has not improved his morning time. At the end of the table, we find Baz, Smith, Miller, Pirro and Rabat.
Jorge Lorenzo takes advantage of the last minutes to regain command, and not just a little; 1'39.555.
Loris Baz crashes in the last corner, which is the only crash of the day in MotoGP.
During the last seconds, Aleix Espargaro and Hector Barbera pass Valentino Rossi.
Only 6 drivers are in the same second.
Iannone, 11th, 1,5 seconds behind.
