Reporter for magazines Motorcycle Revue et GP Racing as well as collaborator of The Team, Michel Turco follows the career of Valentino Rossi since the Italian's debut in Grands Prix. In his latest work, Rossi, the legend, the author offers a review of the key moments of Rossi's career. He looks back in particular on his beginnings in competition and the moment when a young Vale made the crucial decision to abandon karting to concentrate on motorcycle competition. Selected pieces…

With the divorce of his parents, Valentino strengthens his character. He becomes more confident and independent. His taste for competition grew. Already gifted at karting, in 1989 the Rossi clan discovered the pocket bike.

It's a real explosion and on the coast, circuits are improvised with bales of straw. The rental companies are settling in. In summer, it is possible to race on these tiny machines at any time. Young people often come to challenge themselves by leaving the numerous nightclubs that populate the Adriatic coast.

At the Rossi, a decision has to be made. Racing is a lifelong dream for the father. It is also a very concrete desire for the son who in most kart races has been able to show all his driving talent.

“I remember very well the moment when we decided that I would race a motorcycle,” says Valentino, who dreamed, when he was younger, of becoming Formula 1 world champion. It was the winter of 1992, I was thirteen years old. For two years, I alternately participated in karting and pocket bike competitions. Karting is more serious, especially at the beginning, because even at a small level there is more professionalism. When you're a kid, racing on four wheels seems more prestigious, perhaps precisely because you're small and the machine gives you more importance. For me, karting was a serious business while motorcycling was more of a game. Little by little, however, I began to tire of karting. So it was in 1992, I was in the car with my father, near San Giovanni in Marignano, between Tavullia and Catolica. Nobody spoke. I said, “Why don’t we race motorcycles?” I will never forget the look on his face. On the one hand he was happy, because motorcycling has always been his great passion, on the other I felt his concern, because motorcycling is much more dangerous than karting. And I knew what my mother was going to think about it…”
