It was by winning the tenth Grand Prix of his young career in Australia that Joan Mir was crowned World Champion. The Moto2 category is already reaching out to him for next year with a place in the Marc VDS team. Mir, however, only has 35 Grands Prix to his name, and curiously only one pole position.

Joan Mir began his international career in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, finishing in second place in his first year. In 2014, he obtained three victories, two second places and a third position. Many expected him to be a contender for the FIM CEV Repsol Moto3 Junior World Champion title in 2015, but he finished the season in fourth position. That same year he made a wild card appearance at the Australian GP, replacing the injured Hiroki Ono, and impressed (in tenth position after the sixth lap) before crashing.

He then had a very good full season in 2016, with a fifth place finish, before winning the world title this year. During his initial GP, then the following two seasons, he always rode for Leopard Racing, on KTM in 2016 then on Honda this year.

According to Joan Mir, this Sunday in Phillip Island, “I still can’t believe it. I lack words to properly describe my current feelings. If you fight for something for a long time and finally achieve it, it's a great feeling. I thank everyone who helped me achieve this goal and become World Champion. My family, my father, my mother. »

“The race was great, I mastered it in the best way possible, just the way I wanted. Winning the title with a victory in Australia, where I made my GP debut two years ago, is a great feeling. »

“It wasn't a normal race, I tried to stay in front the whole time because I saw that it was chaotic, it was dangerous, some riders fell, but I stayed in the lead, my feelings on the machine were fantastic. »

“It was perfection. I wanted that when I started the weekend on this circuit that I really like, because being named World Champion is a big thing for me. »
