This has been discussed for years, but until now radio communication between the driver and his team had always been refused, so as not to disturb the driver on his machine during the race.

In GP, teams will now be able to send written messages on the dashboard, but that's it. In endurance, the FIM has given its authorization for this type of connection to be tried. Here is how it is envisaged:

The International Motorcycling Federation and Eurosport Events, promoter of the FIM EWC, brought together the teams entered in the FIM EWC during the 8 Hours of Slovakia Ring. On the agenda, the presentation of proposed modifications to the 2017-2018 FIM EWC regulations.

These proposals discussed in Slovakia with the teams will be presented for validation at the next meeting of the FIM Circuit Racing Commission.

Communication with drivers on track

Pilots were offered the opportunity to test HF radio communication systems between the team and its driver during the race. This type of communication, which already exists in auto endurance, has proven its importance and its interest for commentators and viewers in understanding racing events and team strategies.

Tests will be launched during the winter of 2017-2018 to study the implementation and proper functioning of this type of system without harming the comfort and safety of pilots. If these tests are conclusive and validated by the FIM, Eurosport Events will offer contracted teams who wish to work together to introduce these communication systems into racing.
