After enormous joint efforts and collaboration between key stakeholders, the FIM Racing Helmet Homologation Program (FRHP) came into effect for Grand Prix and Superbike races from June 3.
This is an important moment for the program, with the first meeting between interested parties taking place almost three years ago, in July 2016.
From the outset, the goal of the program was to improve rider head protection and address the need for more objective assessment of the safety performance of protective helmet systems for competition. The FRHP was established, with the collaboration of helmet manufacturers, to define a new testing standard that goes beyond existing standards (e.g. UN ECE 22.05, Snell M2015, JIS T8133).
In addition to the immediate adoption of the new standard by Grand Prix and Superbike racing, it will be mandatory for all circuit racing competitions to adhere to the new FIM homologation process from their first event in 2020 .
While the initial focus was on circuit racing, the FIM is already planning to expand the FRHP to off-road disciplines and championships in the coming years. All program details are available on the official website http://www.frhp.org/ – including the complete list of approved helmets.
Speaking about the implementation of the FRHP, FIM President, Jorge Viegas, said : " The entry into force of the FIM racing helmet homologation program represents an important milestone for this project, with the FIM having invested a lot of work alongside helmet manufacturers, our promoters and other recognized associations and representatives key players in the industry, over the past three years to reach this historic moment. As we have made clear, safety and in particular the safety of the riders is one of the main pillars of the progression of the FIM, so it is important that we can reinforce this message with real and real commitment by putting the FRHP in action”.
