Born in Palma de Mallorca on September 1, 1997, Joan Mir launched into the world of motorcycle racing at the age of 10, 4 months after enrolling at the Lorenzo school. He finished his first 6.2 CV Minimoto race in 5th position.

In 2008, he participated in the Balearic 6.2 CV Minimoto Championship and learned about Minimotard Base (Kawasaki 65cc).
In 2009 he won the Balearic 6.2 CV Minimoto Championship.
In 2010, he won the Balearic Minimotard Base Championship (Kawasaki 65cc) while training in 125cc for the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup selection. He qualified for the final but was not selected for the following season.
In 2011, he left his island and won the Bankia Championship in the 160 XL 4T category, while also winning the title of Balearic Champion in Senior Minimotard.

On September 26, he was again selected to test the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup for the second year in a row. Once again a finalist among 112 drivers from around the world, he finished in the most frustrating place of first unsuccessful driver.

In 2012, as winner of the Bankia championship, he received a Moto 3 (new 250 4T category) and won the national Moto PreGP125 championship.


In 2013 and 2014, he was finally selected for the Red Bull GP Rookies Cup. Finishing 9th the first year behind drivers like Karel Anika, Jorge Martin, Stefano Manzi and Enea Bastianini, he is the 2014 vice-champion behind Jorge Martin and ahead of Stefano Manzi.

In 2015, he participated in the CEV Spanish championship which he finished in 3rd position riding a Honda in Machado Leopard colors.

In 2016, he completed his first full season in the Moto3 world championship alongside Fabio Quartararo within the Leopard Racing team. He won the Austrian Grand Prix and finished fifth in the championship with 144 points.
