The sun shone on the Sepang circuit for the first session. The air temperature was 27° and the asphalt temperature was 30°. Romano Fenati set the first fast time in 2'15.2, ahead of Juanfran Guevara and Enea Bastianini. Fenati then moved up to 2'15.0. The track seemed in very good condition, but a little dirty. Tatsuki Suzuki was the first rider to fall, in turn 2 without gravity. Ayumu Sasaki joined him on the ground in turn 15, without consequence.
It started to rain lightly in places with 28 minutes to go, while Romano Fenati dominated in 2'14.682. He preceded Aron Canet and Jorge Martin by 0.3, and Juanfran Guevara by 0.4.
At mid-race, Joan Mir went from twelfth place in 2'15.4 to seventh in 2'15.0. Fenati achieved a 2'14.795, the second time behind his provisional best time. His teammate Jules Danilo was sixth in 2'14.971. The Frenchman will start 3 places back on the grid, penalized for having involuntarily caused Aron Canet to fall at Phillip Island, for “irresponsible driving”. Jules did not appeal.
11 minutes from the checkered flag, Jorge Martin took the lead in 2'14.184, 0.4 ahead of Romano Fenati and 0.6 ahead of Juanfran Guevara, Joan Mir and Aron Canet. Romano Fenati regained the advantage in 2'13.858. It was quite fast because it was 0.3 behind the lap record set in the race by Brad Binder in 2015. The rubber deposit became more and more important, facilitating the improvement in performance.
Livio Loi became first in 2'13.437, faster than the lap record. Then his teammate Johann Mir took over in 2'13.129, while the Belgian fell without gravity in turn 9 during the last lap.
Joan Mir finally finished the session in the lead, ahead of Adam Norrodin, Livio Loi, Romano Fenati, and Enea Bastianini. Jules Danilo was eighteenth.
