If Maverick Vinales finished the 2016 season in style, with a victory on the clock and the best times in the post-Valencia MotoGP tests, he started it more than badly, with disastrous tests at Sepang.
He explains it to the journalist Manuel Pecino in a very rich interview.
" Après le premier test de pré-saison, j’ai
quitté la Malaisie dans une sorte d’embarras. Je me souviens très
bien combien avait été difficile la façon dont s’était déroulé ce
test en raison de l’électronique. Je ne me suis simplement pas
senti à l’aise, à aucun moment, et c’était une grande déception,
après avoir fini 3ème du test de Valence (2015). J’ai quitté Sepang
9ème, à 1,5 seconde du plus rapide … et sans comprendre pourquoi.
J’étais complètement perdu.
Plus tard, quand nous avons fait une analyse précise des données
que nous avions rassemblés en Malaisie, nous avons vu que nous
manquions beaucoup de puissance et que le contrôle de traction ne
marchait pas. Il y avait beaucoup de travail à faire! Nous avons
aussi vu quelques points positifs; comme quoi notre moteur était
plus rapide que les autres dans la catégorie. Et ceci nous a ramené
un peu de confiance. Quand nous sommes arrivés en Australie, la
situation a complètement changé. J’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à
piloter à Phillip Island; cela a probablement été le moment de
l’année où j’ai pris le plus de plaisir.”
We know the rest... A fine work of fine-tuning the electronics rewarded with a victory at Silverstone and a very good 4th place in the championship.
The result could perhaps have been even better if two points had not sometimes hampered the progress of the Vinales/Suzuki duo.
The first was the difficulty for the Suzuki to maintain its grip throughout the race. Davide Brivio is well aware of this and Suzuki is already working on this, alongside an even more powerful engine.
The second was the question mark following a number of failed overtaking attempts by the Suzuki rider. A downside noted recently by Carlo Pernat.
Even if, in 2017, it lost its advantages granted by the regulations, there is no doubt that the Suzuki GSX-RR will be very competitive this year.
It’s up to Iannone to make it shine as much as Vinales did in 2016…
