After two seasons in the MotoGP category, Mike Di Meglio now takes on the role of Aprilia MotoGP factory test rider. His work at the helm of the RS-GP is important for improving racing performance.
In addition to the development program, Di Meglio regroup behind them was scheduled to compete in the next San Marino Grand Prix. However, Aprilia decided not to disperse with a wildcard and stay focused on the official team, “ We carried out several tests and this decision was taken after the last test in Misano,” explains the Toulouse resident. “ Aprilia focuses exclusively on the official team and riders. I understood this decision very well and it is completely normal not to disperse with a wildcard. It's in everyone's interest.«
The program of the 125 2008cc World Champion remains full, “ The program has had about one two-day test per month since I arrived. Recently, we carried out two tests: a first in Austria before the Grand Prix and a second in Misano a few weeks ago, he adds. " During these tests, I was able to ride on the latest versions of Michelin tires. The difference is obvious, it is possible to push more and the feedback is much better. Thanks to this, I was able to find the rhythm again and approach the times of Stefan and Alvaro"
« On the subject of motorcycling, the RS-GP is making great strides. My work is mainly focused on electronics. I also carried out some wing tests and chassis developments. My feedback is then cross-referenced with that of the official riders to improve the behavior of the bike.«
After 13 years as a permanent pilot, the role of test pilot is different according to Di Meglio, “ After my elbow injury at the start of the season, it was less easy to get back into the rhythm as easily as when you have opponents who serve as your reference on the track, he says. " Being a test pilot is a lot of work on yourself. But it was beneficial and I was able to progress enormously on all levels. I work with ITEPS to prepare myself as best as possible. I sometimes complete up to 160 laps per test. You have to know how to perform quickly, endure while avoiding falling. It's a delicate job, because you have to be close to the official riders to bring back as much information as possible and make the bike evolve.«
While the negotiations in the paddock continue, Di Meglio calmly foresees his future, “ First, a test is planned in Valencia from September 19 to 20. Aprilia is interested in me keeping this role next season. If this comes to fruition, I will continue the RS-GP development program. At the same time, I have some contacts in endurance. I missed competing in a few races this year and it would be a new challenge to progress in this championship to learn new things.«
