As a prelude to this Japanese Moto2 Grand Prix, we wrote that the fight between the two main protagonists for the title was going to be played on the mind.
And, recently, Alex Rins had impressed in this area, reducing Johann Zarco's advantage to almost zero despite a collarbone injury...
The tension was therefore at its maximum, and if proof was needed, the refusal of the French driver to speak to the media on the starting grid is proof.
Well, he got it, because if anyone fell for it this weekend, his name is Alex Rins; inconsistent in FP1, fell in FP2 on his injured collarbone and fell due to excessive haste during the first lap of the race.
Overall, 20 points collected by the Ajo driver for his 8th podium of the season which, if they do not yet guarantee him a second title, still provide a real breath of fresh air with three rounds to go! And we can trust the future Yamaha Tech3 rider to keep his concentration and not get carried away too quickly…
Johann zarco: “J’ai perdu quelques places en début de la course et je ne pouvais pas aller à un bon rythme, mais j’utilisais des pneus différents de ceux de mes rivaux et je me suis amélioré alors que la course se déroulait. Bien que j’ai fait quelques erreurs, j’ai pu monter sur le podium. J’espérais rattraper Tom [Luthi] dans les dernières minutes, mais c’était trop difficile parce qu’il a eu une très bonne allure tout au long de la course. Je suis calme parce que nous avons atteint le but que nous nous étions fixés pour cette course, qui était de finir sur le podium. De plus, Alex Rins a peiné ce week-end, et ceci nous a permis d’augmenter notre avance au Championnat du monde.”
Aki Ajo – Directeur d’équipe: “C’était une course parfaite. Je ne peux rien dire d’autre. D’habitude, nous disons que c’est parfait quand nous gagnons la course, mais cette fois, je dois le dire pour ce résultat. Johann [Zarco] a bien analysé les derniers tours; il aurait pu essayer de lutter pour la victoire, mais c’était très risqué de le faire avec des pneus usés. Je suis très heureux qu’il ait été très mûr et ait cette fois ajouté 20 points importants à son total.”
