At the Catalan Grand Prix, the last competition before this meeting in Germany, Celestino Vietti took his third victory in Moto2, after the first race of the year in Qatar and Argentina, becoming the eighth different Italian rider to have more than two victories in this category. Furthermore, this is Italy's 50th victory in this category. Spain leads with 81 Moto2 victories.

Aron Canet finished second in Catalonia for his fifth podium of the season. In addition, it is his 10th podium in Moto2, equaling Jorge Navarro on the list of riders with the most podiums in Moto2. Augusto Fernández finished third in Catalonia for his second podium of the season and 13th overall, adding to his victory in France.

With Joe Roberts' crash at the top of the Catalan Grand Prix, none of the current Moto2 riders have scored points in the season's nine MotoGP races. The 11 Moto2 races that took place at the Sachsenring were won by 10 riders: Toni Elias, Marc Márquez, Jordi Torres, Dominique Aegerter, Xavier Siméon, Johann Zarco, Franco Morbidelli, Brad Binder, Álex Márquez and Remy Gardner.

The only rider to have scored more than one Moto2 victory at this circuit is Marc Márquez, who won in 2011 and 2012, from pole position. None of the riders currently competing full-time in Moto2 have won at the Sachsenring in this category. However, Simone Courses (P2 in 2013 and P3 in 2014), Marcel Schrötter (P3 in 2019) and Aron Canet (P2 in 2021) have already been on the podium on this circuit.

Sam Lowes, who has not scored points since Argentina, where he finished in 10th place, is expected to start his 150th Grand Prix race at this circuit. Furthermore, at the Sachsenring, Simone Courses should become the first rider to reach the milestone of 200 Moto2 starts. Joe Roberts will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Thursday before the German Grand Prix.
