The Italtrans rider has been progressing at full speed in Moto2 since last year, but does not intend to skip any steps yet.

Enea Bastianini started his 2020 season perfectly by landing a podium in the first race. Even if the current exceptional conditions continue to push back the second, the Italian driver will be ready to return to the track when it is finally possible, like all the other categories.

Arriving last year in Moto2, Bastianini did not know the old machines and evolved from the start on the new bikes with the Triumph engine. The latter marked a major change in the category and the Italtrans driver was immediately able to adapt to it. “With the arrival of the new Kalex chassis and the new tires, the level rose and I immediately adapted well, especially to the new compounds. There is also a bit of electronics, we can act on the engine brake and adjust the inclination of the motorcycle. I find it very interesting”, he explained to GPOne.

“From what I could see from an outside perspective, when you had the Honda engine, you had to ride clean, put the bike sideways on corner entry and make it slide a lot. With the Triumph engine, the riding style is different. There's a lot of torque and you can go to the limit using traction, it's a style very close to MotoGP. »

It is certain that Moto2 has never ceased in recent years to want to get closer to the premier category, and that since last year it has taken another step forward, something that the riders in MotoGP in previous years have not done. were not able to benefit. In any case, if it would seem easier for current riders to adapt to MotoGP, other factors always come into play to perform well and they will not be erased any time soon. “Perhaps today there is less difference from one category to another, but it is certain that choosing the right bike and being able to adapt matters a lot”, continued the Italian.

“Morbidelli and Pecco [Bagnaia] struggled a bit, but they are competitive today; Viñales and Quartararo were fast straight away. The Ducati and Honda are much more aggressive than the Yamaha and Suzuki and that may have made the difference. […] Just look at the first season of Bagnaia and Quartararo. Pecco certainly has nothing to envy of Fabio but he had more difficulty. There are many things to consider before making a decision. »

The 22-year-old rider intends to weigh this decision at length, even if it means staying one more year in Moto2, even with a title: “I know it’s an important choice and I want to be ready before making the category change. I'm not in a hurry to get to MotoGP, although naturally I would like it. For me to go there, I will have to be offered the right offer because arriving on the right bike is very important. »
