Two days ago, Carlos Tatay, Spanish Moto3 rider relegated to the Moto2 European Championship where he was the victim of a Very serious accident in Portimão in July 2023, published on his social networks accusations against various stakeholders, including the FIM.
It is easy to understand the Iberian athlete's anger, having to deal with a complicated convalescence following his spinal injuries and now using a wheelchair. So when administrative inertia comes into play to pass the buck and the insurer gives the impression of looking for a way not to cover certain costs, it becomes even more unbearable, and this is what the 21-year-old, already a victim ofAccident raises questions about safety of Portuguese circuit.
La International Motorcycling Federation has decided to respond publicly to the various accusations of Carlos Tatay and to take charge of disability coverage resulting from the accident, even before a decision is made by the insurance.
Good !
Since 2019, the FIM has implemented a global rider insurance programme for riders participating in FIM World Championships/Cups and FIM Prizes with a FIM licence.
In the event of an accident, the FIM riders' insurance programme covers:
• Emergency medical treatment at the event location (subsidiary and complementary to any other insurance held by the driver)
• Repatriation to the pilot's country of residence
• Death and disability
Coverage is provided in the country(ies) where the insured event takes place, which can be anywhere in the world, including the insured rider's country of principal residence.
To date, thousands of pilots benefit from this global insurance program.
Reference is made to Mr Carlos Tatay’s recent public statements. The FIM has been with Mr Tatay since the first day following his unfortunate crash at the Moto2 European Championship event in Portimão (Portugal) on 2 July 2023. The FIM Riders’ Insurance Programme was immediately activated and all emergency medical treatment at the event venue, assistance and repatriation costs were covered by the insurance and paid to Mr Tatay.
Since the beginning and thus well before the publication of the videos on social networks by Mr Tatay, the FIM has maintained regular contact with Mr Tatay as well as with the Real Federación Motociclista Española and the insurance broker. The FIM never indicated to Mr Tatay that the costs covered by the insurance program would not be covered and never refused to pay benefits. The communication to which Mr Tatay referred in his public statements came from the insurance broker and not from the FIM.
To further strengthen FIM's solidarity and support for Mr Tatay, FIM will pay Mr Tatay the disability cover resulting from the accident linked to the specificity of his current health condition, even before a decision is taken by the insurance.
The FIM reiterates its sympathy towards Mr Tatay and will continue to stand by him and all riders.
