For the first time in its history, the Moto2 class – under that name – is heading to Hungary. At the brand-new Balaton Park, which everyone will be discovering, the intermediate category is contesting the fourteenth round of the twenty-two scheduled for 2025, and the suspense promises to be intense. After his victory in Austria, Diogo Moreira reduced the gap to 35 points in the championship, compared to Manuel Gonzalez, who was forced to retire due to mechanical failure. For his part, Aron Canet is back to within 19 points of the leader. He can therefore mathematically take the lead in the general classification this week.

Qualification 1:

After an anonymous Friday, the Fantic drivers were forced to go through Q1. A session in which they started as favorites, both because of their championship standing and their Saturday morning. In FP2, Aron Canet actually set the fastest time of the pack, while Barry Baltus made significant progress in the quick lap at Balaton Park.

This trend was confirmed from the first laps, where the two men flirted with the front positions. Before the checkered flag, however, it was Zonta van der Goorbergh who took the best time, in 1:40.856. But the two Fantic drivers were not far behind. Aron Canet and Barry Baltus completed the top three, which was separated by 3 thousandths. Another driver on the list of favorites to qualify for Q150, Joe Roberts, the winner of the Czech Grand Prix, took the fourth fastest time.

Qualification 2:

As observed this morning during MotoGP Qualifying, getting through Q1 can be an advantage for riders. Since the track is new to all riders, it's always worthwhile to complete a few extra laps on new tires to find your limit. Barry Baltus demonstrated this again at the start of Q2, placing himself in the provisional top three after each rider's first runs.

Ahead of him, Diogo Moreira took provisional pole position with a time of 1:40.380. Closely followed by Manuel Gonzalez (1:40.582), the most consistent at the front since the start of the weekend.

But since nothing is decided until everyone's final laps, the standings are still changing significantly at the end of the session. Zonta van der Goorbergh improves, but falls just 50 behind the Brazilian. Jake Dixon does too, but finishes just behind Manuel Gonzalez. For their part, Moreira and Gonzalez's times don't change. Their previous attempts are still enough to keep them at the front.

The Austrian Grand Prix winner thus takes a chance on another victory by securing pole position. The championship leader secures the front row. Aron Canet ultimately falls to 6th place, while Barry Baltus, despite being in the top three at the start of the session, does not improve further. The Belgian is overtaken by many competitors, and will be only 3th on the starting grid for tomorrow's Moto15 race.
