Qualification 1:
Qualifying Session 1 of the Moto2 Italian Grand Prix featured a strong contender, as Deniz Öncü, the most recent winner, had failed to qualify in the top 14 the day before. The Turk wasted no time in getting to the front, setting a string of fastest lap times, to set a time of 1:50.099.
After a quiet session, which was nonetheless marked by a big fall for Zonta Van der Goorbergh and Nakarin Atiratphuvapat, Joe Roberts ousted the Turk, taking the lap record with an attempt in 1:49.847.
David Alonso, another major competitor in Q1, completed the top three with a time of 3:1. Ayumu Sasaki, who crashed yesterday afternoon, caused a surprise, dislodging Ivan Ortola from fourth place to take the last available spot in Q50.287.
Qualification 2:
From the start of Q2, Diogo Moreira made his mark, setting a time of 1:49.745, which gave him provisional pole position. Albert Arenas and Deniz Öncü completed the provisional top three, with the Turk benefiting from more running time, having made it through Q3.
The hierarchy, however, was about to change significantly at the end of the session. The end of the session was initially marked by a major crash for Barry Baltus, while he was defending some of the front-row hopefuls. Filip Salac would follow suit a few moments later. These incidents nullified the times of all their competitors. Diogo Moreira, although beaten by Manuel Gonzalez, who saw his time nullified, thus retained his pole position.
After securing the first Brazilian pole position in Aragon, he took the second in Italy, at the Mugello circuit. Albert Arenas and Marcos Ramirez completed the top three.
Championship leaders Manuel Gonzalez and Aron Canet are only 4th and 7th on the grid. Despite crashing out at the end of Q2, Barry Baltus maintains his 8th fastest time, ahead of Daniel Holgado.
Moto2 will return to the track this Sunday at 12:15 pm for the start of this weekend's Moto2 race in Italy, at the Mugello circuit.
