The Italian rider, faithful sidekick of Valentino Rossi for years, continues to hope that he will land a quality handlebar in Moto2 and is uncompromising about his sporting values.

On foot in 2019 after finishing ninth in 2018 and being one of the winners of the year in Moto2, Mattia Pasini was quickly called in to make replacements. First in the Pons HP40 team, then in the Ángel Nieto team before spending a large part of the season with Petronas due to the long convalescence of Khairul Idham Pawi. Despite some good results, he was unable to convince to obtain a contract in 2020.

On foot again this year, so he doesn't despair, convinced of being able to do great things if we give him the means. “Currently I don't know [when I will ride again], although I hope it will be soon. Deep down I know that I can still give a lot to this sport and that I have all the cards to aim for the Moto2 title with a solid and competitive team”, he told GPOne.

And the Italian believes that these means come through the structure, not through his personal financial contribution. A conviction that he will not change: “I don’t deny it, I currently work as a commentator for Sky. I'm on foot and as I've always said, I won't bring a briefcase [of money, editor's note.] because that means lowering the quality on the track. So I'm waiting, but I won't put the money in. I think that in the future, one of the possibilities would be the Simoncelli team, that would be an excellent option. »

The SIC58 team has in fact made no secret of its desire to eventually reach the intermediate category, but nothing has been done yet. There is one structure, on the other hand, which evolves at all levels and which would have suited Pasini, it is that of Fausto Gresini: “We spoke with Fausto, we shook hands but in the end nothing was done. I'm really disappointed because we could have done some really interesting races together, its structure is solid. Unfortunately it went differently than I expected and it leaves me with a very bitter taste. »

With the current global situation, the question at the moment is when the championships will resume, and then number 54 may be able to consider things. For the moment, however, he refuses to consider a career in Superbike, as have other riders who found themselves in difficulty in the World Cup and who have had successful careers there.

“I saw the races and they were all very beautiful and interesting. What to say ? If one day an opportunity presented itself, why not? But for the moment I am focused on Moto2 because as I said I know that I am still capable of fighting for the title, and as long as I have this conviction I will not give up."he concluded.
