Peter Acosta

Pedro Acosta is not having a rookie season in Moto2 as simple as the one he experienced last year in Moto3. And for good reason: in the latter case, it ended with a World Champion title. This will certainly not be the case this year. His debut was complicated even though we expected a resounding finish. Then he found solutions to position himself at the forefront, even collecting pole position, podium and victory. But just when everything finally seemed to come together to definitively assert itself, there was this motocross accident between two Grands Prix separated by a week...

The question arose about the relevance of this risky training in this sensitive and busy period in terms of competition, but the facts are there: while he had just taken the podium at the Sachsenring, Peter Acosta went for a motocross session which he left on a stretcher with a fractured femur in his left leg. Logically forfeited for Assen, which followed the German Grand Prix, the driver Ajo KTM is now taking on another competition: that of getting back on track to be at the top for the start of the school year at Silverstone in August.

The delay seems sufficient, but what is detrimental is that this accident puts a stop to the momentum which was beginning to be built after a complicated discovery of the Moto2 category. On this situation, Peter Acosta commented : " adapting to Moto2 hasn't been as easy as I would have liked, but if it was easy it wouldn't be as fun ". He therefore decided to have a little more fun with this injury which he does not minimize: “ the most important thing now is to come back and get back into rhythm. Due to the injury we will have to start again, going step by step and without making mistakes, to be at the same level as we were in Germany ».

He adds, thus showing that he is taking up a challenge: “ It's important to come back in the best shape possible, and these weeks off allow me to focus even more on getting back to one hundred percent of my fitness. I do many hours of physical therapy and work hard in the gym to lose as little muscle mass as possible ».

The fact remains that his assessment at mid-season of his first Moto2 campaign is in line with the roadmap set for this 2022 financial year: “ we didn't start the year the way we would have liked » comments the teammateAugusto Fernandez, vying for the world crown. “ After two consecutive races without points in Argentina and Portugal, and a crash in France while I was in the lead, we were able to turn the situation around. We arrived at the summer break with a victory, a second place and a pole, so we are at the point where we wanted to be, even if I would have liked to reach this level at the start of the season ».

Pedro Acosta's best memory so far is not his first victory

On his best memories so far, Pedro Acosta surprises, by not putting his first victory in Italy at the top of the list: “ Le Mans was one of the best races, even if we missed the victory because of the accident. It was the moment when we took that step forward that allowed us to be at the top. THE Sachsenring was also a special race, because we started from the back of the grid and got on the podium. All the races were good, but I would rank these two even higher than winning the Mugello ».

He also knows where he still needs to improve while being satisfied with a major validated quality: “ we showed that we have pace, and we are strong in that regard. Although I started from far behind in several races, I was able to fight and finish in a good position, and even fight for the victory. We still have room for improvement, but it was important that we were strong in terms of rhythm ". However : " qualifications are the point we need to work on the most. If we manage to be strong on Saturday it would be a big boost for the races. We have the pace, but it is important that on Sunday we start from a good position on the grid ».

He concludes by determining his objective for the remaining nine races: “ the objective is to try to end the year in the best possible way. This is my first season in Moto2 and we finished the first half of the season in good shape, in terms of my physical condition. We want to get back to this point as soon as possible and – why not? – continue with the progress we have made so far. I think we took the time we needed to adapt and get to where we are today. ". And this necessary time mentioned, he will also take in his ambition to one day join the MotoGP.
