Moto2 resumes its tour after the summer break. The first of eleven remaining stops is this weekend at Silverstone, for the British Grand Prix. Before starting the hostilities of this second part of the season, it is Sergio Garcia who leads the way, with seven points ahead of his teammate, Ai Ogura. Injured at Assen, Joe Roberts was not 100% at Sachsenring, but certainly took advantage of the interruption of racing to return to the top and begin to make up for his deficit of 24 units this weekend.
Before we begin, here is a table which summarizes the known facts:
Moto2™ Great Britain, Silverstone |
2023 |
2024 |
FP | 2'05.399 Pedro Acosta | 2'04.021 Aron Canet |
P1 | 2'04.357 Arón Canet | 2'03.602 Aron Canet |
P2 | 2'22.099 Jake Dixon | |
Q1 | 2'17.663 Tony Arbolino
Q2 | 2'16.953 Pedro Acosta
Course | Aldeguer, Canet, Acosta (See here)
All time lap record | 2'03.988 Marco Bezzecchi (2021) |
From the start of P1, two of the strong men of the morning competed for the lead. Aron Canet is the first to take control, but Jake Dixon – who is playing at home this weekend – quickly positions himself in front of the Spaniard.
As the midterms approach, these are the same names at the top of the table. The Briton still in front with a time of 2:04.177, which relegates the Iberian to 61 thousandths. Joe Roberts is then third, 150 thousandths from the leading duo.
In the second half of the session, the times fell slightly, and Ai Ogura stood out from the crowd. He will not stay in the lead for long, since Tony Arbolino and Joe Roberts at the same time set the first times of the weekend under the 2:04 mark. The Italian turning 21 thousandths faster than the American.
Before the checkered flag, many drivers improved, but it was once again Aron Canet who set the fastest time. Celestino Vietti blocks the second time, while Tony Arbolino completes the top-3. The Spaniard's time of 2:03.602 allows him to set a new track record.

In the mix this Friday afternoon, Jake Dixon failed to achieve better than seventh position. Joe Roberts failed in tenth place. The teammates and championship leaders, Ai Ogura and Sergio Garcia, had a discreet P1, and finished fourth and eighth respectively.
Lagging behind since the start of the weekend, future MotoGP rider Fermin Aldeguer took thirteenth place. The Belgian, Barry Baltus, finished 24th.
Note a mechanical problem on Zonta van der Goorbergh's Kalex shortly before the final moments of this outing on the track.
