Moto2

Moto2 resumes its tour after the summer break. The first of eleven remaining stops is this weekend at Silverstone, for the British Grand Prix. Before starting the hostilities of this second part of the season, it is Sergio Garcia who leads the way, with seven points ahead of his teammate, Ai Ogura. Injured at Assen, Joe Roberts was not 100% at Sachsenring, but certainly took advantage of the interruption of racing to return to the top and begin to make up for his deficit of 24 units this weekend.

Before we begin, here is a table which summarizes the known facts:

Moto2™ Great Britain, Silverstone

2023

2024

FP 2'05.399 Pedro Acosta 2'04.021 Aron Canet
P1 2'04.357 Arón Canet 2'03.602 Aron Canet
P2 2'22.099 Jake Dixon 2'03.433 Aron Canet
Q1 2'17.663 Tony Arbolino
Q2 2'16.953 Pedro Acosta
Course Aldeguer, Canet, Acosta (See here)
All time lap record 2'03.988 Marco Bezzecchi (2021)

P2 presents itself as the last opportunity for drivers to get a direct ticket to Q2. To do this, the latter must appear in the top 14 once the checkered flag is waved. The others will compete for the four remaining places for the second part of the qualifying session in Q1, later this Saturday.

During the first part of the session, everyone's times changed very little. The fastest on the track is Manuel Gonzalez, but the Spaniard only laps in 2:04124. A time 5 tenths slower than that established by Aron Canet yesterday afternoon.

Ten minutes from the end, however, he is the only driver, with Zonta van der Goorbergh, to improve his Friday time sufficiently to offer himself a provisional place in Q2.

Celestino Vietti and Joe Roberts will be the first to join them in the last five minutes of driving. Already qualified virtually this Friday, they thus secure their place.

Others will imitate them later, but it is again Aron Canet who knocks out his opponents with an attempt completed in 2:03.433, which allows him to retain the lead in the combined ranking at a time when his opponents were closing in on his previous time. .

No one will be able to disturb him during the final moments of this P2. Van der Goorbergh and Roberts complete the top-3.

While most of the championship leaders manage to serve their interests, Fermin Aldeguer is not there. The future MotoGP rider finished 18th, and will therefore have to compete in his first Q1 of the season this Saturday.
