In an incredibly close second Moto3 World Championship race at the MotorLand Aragón circuit, Ayumu Sasaki finished a solid second after a breathtaking battle at the front, while Deniz Öncü crossed the line in seventh position.
With a good start, Ayumu Sasaki immediately placed himself in the leading group, fighting for the top spots from the start. With all the overtaking, he even moved up to ninth place with four laps to go, but made an incredible comeback in the final laps to finally secure his very first podium in the World Championship in second position, the first podium Moto3 for Red Bull KTM Tech3, just 0,051 seconds behind the race winner.
At the same time, Deniz Oncu had to start from 18th place on the starting grid, but he fought his way through the field every lap. The rookie put in an incredible performance, beating many more experienced competitors until he reached P8 with three laps to go. With a strong final lap, the young Turk overtook another rider and finally crossed the finish line just 0,583 seconds behind the winner, in seventh position.
Ayumu Sasaki, 2th : « My first four years were very difficult and now I am here on the podium. The start of this season wasn't easy, and I also had a bit of bad luck, but I started to understand what I needed to improve, and then it happened. I knew I would be strong in this race and I focused on the last laps. I'm really happy, even if you always want a little more and we were so close to victory. We have three races left, which means we can still improve. I want to thank everyone who supports me and continues to believe in me, even in difficult times. Now we have arrived here, and I know that I need to continue this performance in order to fight for the championship next year. »
Deniz Oncu, 7th : « We actually had a good start to the weekend with fast and consistent times, but unfortunately I made some mistakes in qualifying and only finished 18th, meaning I had a lot of work to do in the race . The race itself was very tough, as there were a lot of fights, but in the end I managed to come out in P7. The podium was so close that I only missed the first place by 0,5 seconds. But let's try again in Valencia! »
Hervé Poncharal: « Un grand jour pour notre équipe Red Bull KTM Tech3 Moto3 et un grand jour pour Tech3 en général, car c’est notre tout premier podium en Moto3 pour notre première année dans cette catégorie. Le Moto3 est un championnat très difficile et il a parfois été difficile pour nous. Nous devons apprendre à bien nous qualifier, ce qui est essentiel dans chaque catégorie, mais encore plus ici. Nous avons un rookie avec Deniz et un jeune pilote, mais un peu plus expérimenté, avec Ayumu et aujourd’hui, nous avons pu voir que tous les deux étaient en lutte pour le podium. Ayumu a fait des choses incroyables lors des deux derniers tours. On pouvait voir qu’il avait la détermination et l’incroyable volonté d’être sur ce podium. Il a terminé sixième au Mans, mais il était un peu déçu, donc je suis très content pour lui et son équipe, car je pense qu’ils le méritent vraiment. Il travaille vraiment dur, il passe toute l’année loin de son pays et je voudrais le remercier pour son dévouement. Mais je ne peux pas oublier Deniz. Il a manqué les qualifications, mais à la fin de la journée, il est revenu comme un démon. Il était devant Ayumu à quatre ou cinq tours de la fin et nous nous sommes dit : “Wow, ça va être une super course”. Septième est un excellent résultat. Il égalise son meilleur résultat, et il n’est qu’à une demi-seconde du vainqueur, donc je voudrais remercier nos deux gars. Ayumu est sur le podium, mais Deniz est aussi un prétendant au podium pour sa saison de débutant. Merci à nos deux pilotes, à toute l’équipe Moto3 et faisons une petite pause pour finir la saison comme nous l’avons fait ici. »
