The boss of the SpeedUp team, Luca Boscoscuro, would like to double the displacement for the Moto3 category. He would like 500cc twins to replace the current 250cc. Because the age limit was gradually raised from 16 to 18 years old, some drivers are now 1.80 m tall. In addition, the difference in displacement between the Moto3 (250cc) and Moto2 (765cc) categories has widened too much since Triumph equipped the Moto2 category.

The Moto3 category debuted in 2012, replacing the 125cc two-stroke category. The Moto3 has since been equipped with a 250 cc four-stroke single-cylinder engine, developing approximately 60 hp, with the guarantee of maintaining a simple and easy-to-maintain mechanical layout to prioritize durability, all for a budget that does not require not exceed €16. Even if the current Moto000s are clearly faster and more competitive than in the 3 season, after a decade of operation, this category has made virtually no progress in terms of engines.

The simplicity of the engine used in the Moto3 category and the level of performance of the engine which is “locked” at the development level makes the racing pace of these motorcycles practically equal regardless of the difference in brand/manufacturer that developed them. This is therefore what makes the existence of races in the form of large groups always present in Moto3, presenting close battles of up to ten riders who can only make the difference in their aspiration, braking and acceleration.

But close races also have side effects. The large number of pilots in a pack means that they do not have enough space and time to avoid the possibility of another pilot crashing, as has happened in many fatal cases, small category races, as unfortunately happened to Jason Dupasquier, Dean Berta Vinales and Victor Steeman. Racing requires faster speed, so there is a race pace limit each weekend in the MotoGP and WorldSBK categories which has increased from an initial minimum of 107% to 105% of the fastest rider's pace.

Although it may seem paradoxical, being faster is safer in certain conditions, and in the world of motorsport, that's how it is. If Moto3s were harder to ride or even faster, it would be easier for riders to make a difference on the track. There would be no large, potentially dangerous groups, although that could detract from the excitement of the close race much enjoyed by spectators.

Also, on Speedweek.com, Luca Boscoscuro, the head of the Beta Tools Speed Up team said that “Now riders arrive in the Moto3 world championship at the age of 18, they are 180 cm tall and weigh 70 kilograms. They have to run with this little 250 cc single-cylinder engine with 3 hp. We need a bigger bike with a more powerful engine for the Moto60 category. Not only because the rookies are now 3 years old, but also because the gap between the 18cc engine and the 250cc three-cylinder engine in Moto765 has become too big. » His proposal: a 500 cc V-twin engine with an output of 70 hp could be considered a suitable replacement.

There are at least two reasons behind Luca Boscoscuro's proposal. The first concerns safety by avoiding the accumulation of drivers in a large peloton which has the potential to create a terrible domino effect in the event of a crash. The second is to reduce the performance gap between Moto3 and Moto2. However, in general, technical regulations, particularly issues such as engine displacement specifications, will remain frozen until at least 2026.
